A recent study highlights how the number of traffic fatalities has risen over the past 10 years. It also points out the financial ramifications of these accidents.

This information is important to try and improve safety. However, it is also critical for people to understand why accidents are occurring and how to avoid them. If they are unfortunate enough to be involved in a crash or to lose a loved one, they must know their options in the aftermath.

Road fatalities increased by nearly one-quarter over the past decade

The National Transportation Research Nonprofit (TRIP) issued a study showing the worrisome level of road deaths in Virginia. It said that the number of deaths in auto accidents increased by 24% over 10 years.

There were certain times that were worse, specifically in 2020 when the national health crisis emerged and people were taking advantage of emptier roads to drive at excessive speeds, drink and drive and take part in other dangerous behaviors that tend to cause collisions.

In 2022, it was a particularly bad year in Virginia with more than 1,000 people dying in auto accidents. The aggressive driving and flouting of the laws after 2020 is believed to be a byproduct of how people’s behaviors changed. The statistics have improved since then, but only slightly and it is still worse than it was in 2014. Financially, these accidents have cost Virginia more than $34 billion.

The increase in fatalities has impacted Virginia and the entire nation. When looking at the numbers from 2011 when there were just under 32,800 deaths, it was the safest year on the roads in more than 60 years. Just seven years later, it jumped by around 4,000 deaths.

People need to address the consequences of an auto accident

After there has been a motor vehicle accident in which people were injured or killed, it is imperative to know what the future might hold. This research shows just how common these collisions are and that the numbers are getting worse. It also discusses the financial ramifications. Given the challenges people can face after a crash, it is vital to think about the available steps to make a full recovery in every way. Having advice can be beneficial from the start.
